Tour Overview

marangu route is the easiest and shortest route, kilimanjaro’s summit and is known as the “coca cola” or “tourist” route. marangu route is the only route in kilimanjaro with the comforts of solar powered sleeping huts and comfortable beds at every camp. the huts are communal. there are beds at both mandara and kibo huts and 120 beds at horombo hut. bathrooms and running water are available at the two lower huts. this route is usually done in 5 days, but you can do it in 6 days for better acclimatization. you can spend your extra day resting at horombo or climbing to a basecamp below kibo’s sub peak mawenzi. adventure africa expedition daily packages will take you to this the highest mountain in africa with our qualified guides potters and cooks who are fluent in english speaking

Day to Day Tour Plan

Day 1: Nairobi – Arusha

Pick up from the Airport or from your hotel after the breakfast, the departure is normally 0800am, then proceed to Kenya and Tanzania border by the name Namanga, the drive from Nairobi to the border normally takes about 2-3 hrs, on arrival visit the migration department, those who do not have the visa obtain one and this process normally takes about 30min depending with the people applying. The visa cost 50usd for Non Americans and 100usd for American citizens, after the migration proceed to Arusha and this will take you about 1.5-2hrs.

Day 2: Arusha – Mandara Hut

After breakfast, drive 45kms to Marangu Gate (1860m). Walk 9 kms through dense semi-tropical Rain Forest to Mandara Hut (2744m). Dinner and overnight.

Day 3: Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

Depart early morning for a 10hr walk up to Horombo Hut (3761m). The landscape becomes more rigged and rocky but superb, with mawenzi and Kibo peaks in view. Dinner and overnight.

Day 4: Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut

After breakfast, proceed on a 6hr walk through spectacular mountain vegetation to Kibo Hut (4732m). Dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Kibo Hut Uhuru Peak – Horombo

The final attempt to the summit is made in the early hours of the morning at 2:00 am. It takes about 5 hrs to the most difficult steep part of the route to Gil man Point(5681m). From Gil mans, it takes one hour thirty minutes to Uhuru Peak (5895m.) Descend to Horombo Hut for dinner and overnight.

Day 6: Horombo – Moshi – Arusha

Descent is rapid. After breakfast, walk down to Marangu Gate for transfer to Moshi. Dinner and overnight in Moshi or Arusha

Day 7: Arusha – Nairobi – Zanzibar or Safari

Depart for the airport or other destinations in Tanzania or Kenya. A trip to the beaches at Mombasa, Malindi, Lamu and Zanzibar is a good way to recuperate. We can arrange many reasonably priced trips and safaris around Moshi and the Kilimanjaro region.

What to bring on trekking either Kilimanjaro

  1. Waterproof rucksack with day pack
  2. Sleeping bag (covering at least 3 seasons)
  3. Roll mats and insulation pads
  4. Comfortable hiking boots, light walking trainers thongs (flip – flops)
  5. Gaiters (useful when encountering snow)
  6. Wooden walking stick / ski pole
  7. Sunglasses or snow – goggles, sun hat, balaclava or woolen hat
  8. Warm scarf, gloves, mittens and thermal underwear
  9. Sweaters / jumpers, anorak / raincoat, water and windproof pants, jackets, t-shirt, several pairs of socks
  10. Long sleeved shirt with collar, small towel, toiletries and toilet paper
  11. Sunscreen and lip salve
  12. Flash light (head mounted preferable) and spare batteries
  13. Water bottle
